Celebrate America’s beauty with compositions written by American composers, inspired by the sights and sounds of the place we call home. Copland’s The Heiress Suite, created from the Oscar winning score to The Heiress film, opens the evening program. Pianist John Novacek first joins the Symphony for Gould’s Interplay, and after intermission, for Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, which combines jazz rhythms with classical elements. Putting nature’s beauty into song is the Grand Canyon Suite by Grofé, the conclusion to just some of the breathtaking landscapes we get to experience. Photographer and multimedia artist, Nicholas Bardonnay, is presenting Grand Canyon Country, which is choreographed to Grofé’s monumental Grand Canyon Suite. From river to rim, Grand Canyon Country showcases the stunning vistas, desert beauty, and surprising islands of life found in and around this unmistakable natural wonder.
Enhance your experience before the performance and during intermission with multimedia displays presented by students from San Juan Diego Catholic High School throughout the lobbies. Also enjoy a pre-concert talk by host Jeffrey Blair at 7:10 p.m. inside Dell Hall.
